Are you Drinking Empty Calories?

Friday, February 19, 2010 by Sara Cox
When we think of calories, we think of them coming from the foods we eat.  When you have a medium cafe latte with whole milk with breakfast, then a 20 oz. regular soda ad lunch, and a 16 oz. sweetened iced tea with lemon mid-day, and glass of wine at dinner, that doesn't sound unreasonable, does it?  After all, they are liquid!

Those 4 beverages amont to 800 calories - or 40% of an average 2,000 calorie daily diet.  And although they keep you hydrated throughout the day, these 800 calories are EMPTY calories.

Sodas, coffee, tea...there is no nutritional benefit to any of these beverages, yet they seem to pack on the calories.  Drinking a 100% organic pure juice, like Biotta Juice, however, will provide you with the same calories, but with the added benefit of vitamins, minerals and other health benefits, like blood pressure lowering properties of our Beet Juice, and soothing an upset stomach like our Potato Juice.

Juice drinks and waters are often enhanced with vitamins and herbs.  Although at first glance they seem like a healthy alternative to soda, but how much sugar and artificial flavoring doe they contain?

Biotta Juices are 100% pure - not from concentrate and never diluted.  They are packed full of all natural nutrients, and come in 2 sizes of convenient, recyclable glass bottles.

Does Sauerkraut help Canker Sores?

Thursday, February 18, 2010 by Sara Cox
An excerpt from 'The People's Pharmacy' by Joe and Teresa Graedon

Q:
My favorite home remedy is sauerkraut for canker sores.  If I feel one coming on, I put a wad of chopped sauerkraut on the area, hold it there for a minute, then chew it and swallow.  I do this three or four times a day for 2-3 days.  At least 95% of the time, the sore disappears.  For me, that is a miracle, since I have been plagued for many years.

A:  Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are mysterious.  Trauma to the mouth from sharp food can trigger a sore.  So can immune suppression (chemotherapy) or a deficiency of folic acid, vitamin B-12 and iron.

Long ago, we heard about a 1930's canker-sore remedy.  A dentist recommended swishing sauerkraut juice serveral times a day, swallowing about a tablespoon.  Perhaps the bacteria that ferment cabbage into sauerkraut provide helpful nutrients.

As a sufferer of canker sores, myself, I can relate to this as a miracle!  Many things seem to cause mine - improper eating, lack of sleep and exercise, and of course, those times when the toothbrush slips right into your cheek.  And I thought Sauerkraut Juice was just good for digestion -- watch out canker sores!

Get Healthy as a Family

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 by Sara Cox

Have fruits and vegetables become a thing of the past?

One of today’s fastest growing problems is childhood obesity.  Why are so many kids packing on pounds? For the same reasons adults are: too many calories and too little exercise. "Adults are passing on their unhealthy habits to the next generation," says Colleen Thompson, a dietitian and coauthor of Overcoming Childhood Obesity (Bull, 2003). "Childhood obesity is really a family issue. To fix things, the whole family has to change."  A recent study of 3,000 kids ages 4 to 24 months found that many of the negative eating patterns plaguing adults are affecting children as early as infancy. Not only was fruit and vegetable consumption low, but french fries were the most popular choice of toddlers. Moreover, 40 percent of 7-month-olds and 60 percent of 1-year-olds had candy or dessert at least once a day.

Adopt a Healthier Lifestyle

Some basic things you can do to adopt a healthy lifestyle - for both you and your kids:
1.  Exercise.  Let your kids see you exercise.  Exercise with your kids.
2.  Eat dinner as a family.  Not only can you enjoy some quality time, but eating together helps you know what your kids are actually eating.
3.  Control portions - both for you and your kids.  Just becuase you are the parent, doesn't mean you need to eat 2-3 times as much as the kids.  Don't go back for seconds.  Kids see that and think that is what they are supposed to do.
4.  Model healthy behaviors.  You can't expect your kids to do things that you wouldn't do yourself.  Turn off the tv - eat your fruits and vegetables!
5.  Include healthy snacks and drinks - like Biotta 100% pure organic fruit and vegetable juices.  This is a great way to increase energy, enjoy a wholesome snack, and get your daily requirements of fruits and vegetables!

The Juice – Your Questions Answered

Friday, January 1, 2010 by Sara Cox

Every day, we field questions about our Biotta juices—ingredients, potential health benefits, our proprietary manufacturing process, distribution, etc.  We thought that, if a few people are asking these questions, then perhaps many of you would be interested in the answers as well.  When you see our blog featuring The Juice – Your Questions Answered, you’ll know we are answering consumer questions about our 100% organic juices that may be relevant to you.

QUESTION:
I see sugar as one of the ingredients of your Elderberry Juice and Breakfast Juice.  Do your juices include added sugar?

ANSWER:
Elderberry juice is the only juice where we add sugar—organic cane sugar.  We add it because the elderberry has a very strong, bitter taste without the added sugar.  Elderberry Juice has 34 g of sugar in total; 10.5 g are naturally occurring, and 23.5g are added.

Our Breakfast Juice also lists 22.5g sugar, but all of the sugar content is naturally occurring from the ingredients of the product; there is no sugar added.  Our vegetable juices also contain sugar, but they are all naturally occurring.

The Benefits of 100% Organic Juices

Wednesday, December 30, 2009 by Sara Cox

Studies continue to show the benefits of organic products.  In the Fall issue of The Organic Report, the News & Trends section features an article on this subject.  It examines recent findings of a study conducted by the University of Aix-Marseille in France, commissioned by the French agency for Food Safety.

The study confirmed “…the high nutritional quality and safety of food produced using organic practices.”*  The benefits include more dry matter, minerals and antioxidant micronutrients than non-organic counterparts.  In addition, the study showed that 100% organic foods have “…significantly lower amounts of nitrates and residues of toxic chemical pesticides, fungicides and herbicide.”*

Biotta Juices – All-Natural. 100% Organic
What do we mean when we say our juices are 100% organic?  Biotta uses only organic farming for all our fruits and vegetables.  For more than 50 years, we’ve been dedicated to producing top-quality organic juices from fruits and vegetables that are fresh from the field to the bottle.  Over the years, Biotta has farmed more than 1,700 acres of chemical-free, fertilizer-free, and toxic-free land.

But, production processes also have a direct influence on the quality of a juice.  The basic rule is: the fewer steps in the production and the lower the processing temperature, the higher the nutritional value of the juice.  Biotta extracts juice from healthy, field/vine-ripened fruits and vegetables.  Competitors often store vegetable juices in tanks to be bottled as needed.  The result is that these juices are repeatedly heated and the quality is diminished.  Biotta bottles our juices immediately after extracting the juice.

And Biotta juices are never reconstituted from concentrates, and no artificial additives (preservatives, vitamins) are used.  Biotta juices are 100% organic, fresh from the field to the bottle.  Great care is taken throughout the growing and production processes to ensure our customers receive the freshest juices available on the market.

In the News – More on the Elderberry

Monday, December 28, 2009 by Sara Cox

I keep reading more and more about the benefits of elderberries.  In the Thursday, December 10 edition of the Indianapolis Star, two articles mention elderberry as an effective weapon to keep you healthy and to help you regain your health when you are ill.

In “Feeling Lousy?  These ideas may get you back in the pink,” author Shari Rudavsky talks about the research that backs up claims for therapies to try when you are ill.  One of the things she mentions is taking elderberry at the first sign of cold or flu.*

In the same issue, another article entitled “Alternatives: Experts Wary” talks about alternative therapies, what the Center for Disease Control and Prevention does and does not endorse, and what you can do to prevent and treat the flu.  The Star asked a number of local experts for their opinions.  Products with elderberry in them ranked high on the list.  That’s because, “…unlike other alternative products, elderberry has performed well in double-blind placebo-controlled studies that have shown that it can shorten the duration of the flu.  These studies, many done on a liquid extract of elderberry called Sambucol, found that elderberry worked best when taken with the onset of symptoms.”**

An article entitled “Are these fruit products as super as they claim?” looks skeptically on some of the newer, more “exotic” fruits, such as acai, goji, mangosteen, and maqui.  But, even this article admits that “…it’s a good idea to try to get more antioxidants into your diet.”***  That’s where the elderberry comes in.  “In general,” explains the article, “darker fruits and vegetables … have higher contents of …naturally occurring chemicals, called phytochemicals, that give them color.  More phytochemicals usually means a higher antioxidant content.”***

In previous posts (About the Elderberry-12/1/09 and The Benefits of Elderberry Juice-12/4/09), we’ve examined the ways elderberry juice can help boost your immune system, ease the strain on the respiratory system, and even help lower cholesterol.  Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is made from freshly gathered, sun-ripened organic elderberries and is available in an 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottle.

More about Beet Juice

Thursday, December 10, 2009 by Sara Cox

We’ve written often about the wonders of beet juice.  Here are a few of the benefits highlighted in recent articles:

1.    Provides energy boost.  A recent study published by Exeter University concluded that drinking two glasses of beetroot juice per day can help people exercise for up to 16% longer.*

2.    Lowers blood pressure.  An online February 4th issue of Hypertension cited a study that showed a drop in blood pressure one hour after drinking beet juice.  The study concluded that two cups of beet juice can lower blood pressure by approximately 10 points.

3.    Increases dietary nitrates – Beet juice increases the amount of nitric oxide in the body.  That, in turn, helps blood vessels relax, lowers blood pressure and has anti-inflammatory benefits as well.**

4.    May assist in helping other illnesses and healthcare issues – Many other sources indicate that beet juice may be therapeutic for sexual weakness, kidney stones, gall bladder, kidney, liver and prostate troubles.***

5.    Aids in digestion problems – Beet juice contains chlorine, a mineral acts to regulate digestion by controlling the rhythmical contraction of the abdomen.***

6.    Builds immune system – Beet juice is also believed to help maintain cell function and strengthen your body’s own natural resistance to disease.

7.    Helps build strong bones – Beet juice contains calcium, important to maintaining bone health.****

8.    Helps fight cancer - Betacyanin is the ingredient that has been identified as the main tumor-fighting agent in beets.  Betacyanin gives beets its bright reddish purple color, and it also helps to detoxify the body, in general.*****

Beet Red
Beets can also be used as a natural food coloring.  In 1971, Red No. 2 dye was linked to cancer and, ever since then, health-conscious consumers have been looking for natural food dyes.  Beets have a distinct red color that can be used as a natural food dye or spray dried to make beet root powder.******

The Amazing Beet
In addition to these wonderful health benefits, did you know that beets can help defeat icy roads?  Seriously. In states like Maryland, beets are being used as a great eco de-icer!  “It is the sugar beet’s by-product—a de-sugared liquid typically fed to animals or flushed down the drain—that can withstand temperatures down to -30 degrees Fahrenheit.”  “…Combinations of beet juice and rock salt are being sprayed on streets and highways by the transportation departments in DC, Missouri and Ohio and in cities scattered throughout the Midwest and Northeast,”*******

Biotta Beet Juice
Uses for the astounding beet just keep multiplying!  At any rate, Biotta Beet Juice is our most popular selection, rich with natural minerals and vitamins.  It’s a refreshing, crisp, cool and healthy addition to your diet.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

Drink Juice to Detoxify and Cleanse

Monday, December 7, 2009 by Sara Cox
“You do not have to adhere to a “detox” regimen to rid your body of any toxins.  Your body is equipped with your liver and kidney to rid your body of any toxins and waste.  A healthy, well balanced diet that provides adequate fiber from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables will keep waste matter moving in your GI tract and aid in its elimination from your body.”
-- Joan Salge Blake, MS, RD, LDN and Clinical Associate Professor at Boston University's Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.*

When we talk about detoxifying or cleansing your body from within, the foods you eat and the juice you drink can help to cleanse the body’s detoxification organs, including the liver, intestines, kidneys and skin, preventing harmful toxic buildup.**

Simply by making smart food choices and eating healthy foods, we can assist our bodies in removing toxins.  Here are some foods that help this process, some of which are found in Biotta 100% organic juices.

•    Apples help eliminate toxins and clean the intestines.
•    Avocados lower cholesterol, dilate blood vessels and block many known carcinogens.

•    Beets contain compounds that make them superb blood and liver cleansers.  Biotta Beet Juice is available in 8.4 and 16.9 fluid ounce recyclable glass bottles.

•    Blueberries contain natural aspirin; they lower inflammation and block bacteria in the urinary tract.

•    Cabbage contains anticancer and antioxidant compounds, cleanses the digestive tract and strengthens the liver.

•    Celery and Celery Seeds are great blood cleansers; they have many anti-cancer compounds as well.  Biotta Celery Root Juice is available in 16.9 fluid ounce recyclable glass bottles.

•    Cranberries cleanse the urinary tract since they contain antibiotic and antiviral properties.
•    Flaxseed and Flaxseed Oil contain essential fatty acids, particularly Omega-3s.
•    Garlic cleanses harmful bacteria, intestinal parasites and viruses.
•    Grapefruit has pectin fiber that cleanses the blood.
•    Kale contains powerful anti-cancer and antioxidant compounds.
•    Legumes are loaded with fiber that lowers cholesterol and cleanses the intestines.
•    Lemons are great liver detoxifiers.**

You can help ward off toxic buildups by filling your diet with these delicious fruits, vegetables, nuts, oils and beans.  And, one of the best way to get some of these nutrients is with 100% all-natural Biotta juices.

Enjoy Holiday Cheer – the Healthy Way

Wednesday, November 25, 2009 by Sara Cox

The party has started, hasn’t it?  It starts with one candy bar—or maybe two—at Halloween, slides through Thanksgiving turkey dinner, and ends with some holiday cheer at Christmas and ringing in the New Year.  You find you have indulged too much, gained weight and have failed, once again, to follow a healthy regimen.

In an October 31st article in the Hindustan Times entitled “How to stay healthy while you party,” author Veenu Singh recommends certain steps to take to ensure a healthy holiday season.

1.    Have a healthy drink.  Healthy drinks, like teas and juices, can help detoxify the body and help keep us from gaining weight by drinking other, more calorie-laden drinks.
2.    Cleanse your system.  The author recommends cleansing your system after a big social event at which you may have overindulged.  Biotta’s 100% organic juices are a great way to cleanse the body.
3.    Drink in moderation. A friend of mine brings a bottle of Biotta juice to parties to help limit her consumption of alcohol and give her something healthy to drink.
4.    Snack smart.  There is a difference between snacking on empty calories and healthier snacks, like nuts and fruits.  Opt for the healthy choices.
5.    Stock up on antioxidants.  Antioxidants help get rid of toxins and boost your immune system.  Biotta juices are rich in antioxidants.
6.    Stay active.  It is especially important to stay active through the holidays.  Get moving, doing whatever exercise you can.  Any exercise is better than none, including parking your car at the end of the parking lot and walking a little to get to the store.
7.    Balance your calories.  Biotta 100% organic juice is a great, low-calorie way to help balance your intake while getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

Yes, we can stay healthy during the holidays, and Biotta all-natural juices can play a big part in that.  Want more information about Biotta juices?  If you’re a consumer and want to know where to find our juices, click on the beet juice icon on the right.  If you’re a retailer that already carries our juices, click the carrot juice icon to be included in our retailer directory.  If you have any other questions, just email us.

The Juice – Your Questions Answered

Monday, November 23, 2009 by Sara Cox
Every day, we field questions about our Biotta juices—ingredients, potential health benefits, our proprietary manufacturing process, distribution, etc.  We thought that, if a few people are asking these questions, then perhaps many of you would be interested in the answers as well.  When you see our blog featuring The Juice, you’ll know we are answering consumer questions about our 100% organic juices that may be relevant to you.

Question: What type of tea is used in Biotta juices?

Answer: Three of our juices—Biotta Energy Drink, Breakfast Cocktail and our Elderberry Juice—contain small amounts of tea, used primarily to balance the strong or tart flavors of the fruit juices to make them more appealing.  Different teas are used for each of these juices.

Biotta Energy Drink has Paraguay Tea infusion.  Paraguay Tea comes from a “large, white-flowered shrub grows wild near streams, largely cultivated in South America for the drink obtained by infusing the leaves. The consumption in South America is vast, as it is drunk at every meal and hour.”  The tea is a diuretic and diaphoretic (an agent that produces perspiration).*

Biotta Breakfast Juice includes green tea.  Green tea originates from China and has become associated with many cultures in Asia from Japan to the Middle East.**   The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times. “Today, scientific research in both Asia and the west is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. For example, in 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.***

Biotta Elderberry Juice contains tea extracted from the elder flower.  Elder flowers are traditionally used to treat influenza, colds, mucus, sinusitis, feverish illnesses and other upper respiratory tract problems, as well as hay fever. ****

Question: How much juice should I drink in order to get the health benefits?

Answer: In general, we recommend drinking one 8 ounce glass of our juices every day.  Biotta all-natural juice is rich in vitamins and minerals.  You can safely increase your consumption from one glass to two glasses or even more.  And, you can break up the serving into smaller glasses, if you prefer, perhaps a morning, mid-day and evening portion.

Certain medical studies may recommend varying amount of juice to gain health benefits.  For example, a recent study published by Exeter University concluded that drinking two glasses of beetroot juice per day can help people exercise for up to 16% longer.*  And, an online February 4th issue of Hypertension cited a study that showed a drop in blood pressure one hour after drinking beet juice.  The study concluded that two cups of beet juice can lower blood pressure by approximately 10 points.  Studies like these may help you determine how much of a specific juice would be beneficial for you.

Fighting High Cholesterol – Part 2

Monday, November 2, 2009 by Sara Cox
In my previous post, we looked at some basic tips for reducing your cholesterol level, according to an article from the Living Well Center, entitled “Cholesterol:  Fighting back with heart-healthy choices.”*

You may be wondering which Biotta juices, in particular, are likely to help in the fight against high cholesterol.

Biotta Carrot Juice is an excellent source of pro-vitamin A, vitamins C, D, E, K, B1 and B6.  Carrots are also rich in bioton, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and organic sodium.**  The benefits of drinking organic carrot juice are many.  Carotene is an anti-oxidant that has health benefits that may positively affect a variety of conditions and diseases, including:
•    Balancing blood acidity and blood sugar.
•    Detoxifying the liver and reducing toxicity in the body
•    Reducing the risk of heart diseases and stroke by cleansing arterial deposits
•    Protecting the respiratory system from infections
•    Reducing cancer risks
•    Lowering serum cholesterol levels
•    Easing nasal congestion
•    Regulating chronic constipation problems
•    Keeping the optic system in good condition, with special protection against astigmatism, macular degeneration and cataracts
•    Reducing inflammation and easing arthritis and rheumatism
•    Building the immune system
•    Nourishing the skin and helping to prevent psoriasis and acne
•    Preventing ulcers
•    Eliminating excess fluids from the body*

Tomatoes, found in Biotta Vegetable Juice Cocktail, are among the healthiest of foods, and that means tomato juice has some amazing properties.  As a good source of potassium, lycopene, niacin, vitamin B6 and folate, tomatoes can help to lower the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol.  Tomatoes can also help reduce the risk of colon cancer, decrease the frequency of migraine attacks, and help diabetics keep their blood sugar levels under control.**

Biotta Celery Root Juice may help lower cholesterol in two ways.  Laboratory studies have shown that celery contains butyl phthalide, which may reduce levels of LDL cholesterol.  In addition, celery aids in increasing bile acid secretion, and that helps to remove cholesterol from the body.***  Biotta’s Celery Root Juice is made from freshly harvested celeriac and is available in 16.9 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

Biotta Beet Juice is our most favored juice by consumers, rich with natural minerals and vitamins.  It’s a refreshing, crisp, cool and healthy addition to your diet.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.  Beet juice helps maintain cell functions and strengthens the body’s resistance to diseases. Recent studies show beet juice may help reduce blood pressure and lower cholesterol.

Fighting High Cholesterol – Part 1

Friday, October 30, 2009 by Sara Cox
Want to lower your cholesterol and reduce your chance of developing heart disease?  Here are some basic tips for reducing your cholesterol level, according to an article from the Living Well Center, entitled “Cholesterol:  Fighting back with heart-healthy choices.”*

Eat right, get plenty of exercise, and begin to understand your family health history.  Those are the starting points for a healthy diet and lifestyle, which may help reduce total cholesterol.  In general, states the article, your goals should be to have your “good” cholesterol higher than your “bad” cholesterol.*

Good Fats
Even good fats are high in calories, so you have to limit their amounts.  Steer towards monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, such as olive, canola, peanut, corn, safflower and soybean oils.

Heart-healthy Choices
Here are some heart-healthy choices to help lower your cholesterol:

1.    Switch your dairy products.  Use two percent or skim milk instead of whole milk, for example.  Use low-fat or nonfat sour cream, yogurt, cheese and ice cream.
2.    Choose lean cuts of meat, including turkey, chicken, pork tenderloin, and beef tenderloin.
3.    Cook with the “good” oils mentioned above.
4.    Use more plant-based protein, such as beans, peas, lentils, tofu and soy.
5.    Boost your intake of food high in fiber, including oatmeal, oat bran cereal, beans, peas, apples, bananas and citrus fruits.
6.    Increase whole grains in your diet.
7.    Use products that contain plant sterol or stanol esters, components that help keep your body from absorbing cholesterol.  These include margarines, orange juice and yogurt.
8.    Eat fatty fish once a week.  Pregnant and nursing women should limit their intake of tuna to 6 ounces a week because of concerns over mercury levels.
9.    Increase the amounts of fruits and vegetables you eat.  And what better way to get your fruits and vegetables than with Biotta 100% organic juices?
10.    Keep an eye on dietary cholesterol. Remember, egg yolks are filled with dietary cholesterol, whereas egg whites are cholesterol-free, as are egg substitutes.
11.    Order your foods fresh, sautéed, grilled, broiled or poached.
12.    Watch your portion sizes, and eat half of what you order out.
13.    Balance a high-fat appetizer, for instance, with a heart-healthy entrée.
14.    Limit alcohol consumption.  While wine may raise your good cholesterol a bit, there is also evidence that it can raise triglyceride levels.
15.    Choose healthier options at fast food restaurants.  Most have salads, yogurts and baked potatoes.*
Biotta 100% organic juices can be an important element in helping to lower cholesterol levels.  In my next post, we’ll look at those Biotta juices that may directly affect high serum cholesterol levels: Biotta Carrot Juice, Biotta Vegetable Juice Cocktail, Biotta Celery Root Juice, and Biotta Beet Juice.

Elderberry Juice and Your Immune System – as seen on Dr. Oz

Friday, October 23, 2009 by Sara Cox
Last week, Dr. Oz did a feature on his daily TV show (NBC) about ways to boost your immune system, with the cold and flu season knocking at our doors.  He explained that we need white blood cells and antibodies to build our immune system and win the fight against invading bacteria and germs.

What foods did he recommend to build the immune system?  Building “Super Immunity,” as Dr. Oz called it, is easy when you include these foods in your diet.  Some of them may surprise you.

1.    Sardines: an important source of antibodies for the immune system.

2.    Papaya Carrot juice: the carrots are high in beta-carotene, which builds white blood cells and makes your immune system more aggressive.

3.    Miso Soup: boosts antibodies in your bloodstream.

4.    Elderberry juice: Dr. Oz explained that elderberry juice actually helps block the flu and has antiviral properties that are outstanding.   European and American cultures have long used elderberry juice to boost the immune system and help relieve colds and flu.  Because elderberry juice has been medically proven to be a strong anti-viral and immune system enhancer, it is often recommended as part of a health maintenance program.
5.    Garlic

Biotta Elderberry Juice Answers the Call
With the severity of these new strains of the flu this season, why not take Dr. Oz’s suggestion and try Elderberry Juice?  Biotta Elderberry Juice is delicious—and good for you!  It boosts your immune system and eases the strain on the respiratory system.  Elderberry juice does wonders for boosting the immune system by increasing the production and performance of white blood cells and building resistant to various kinds of infections.* When a person does become ill, they may suffer from blocked respiratory passages.  The natural active ingredient in elderberries can help regenerate the cilia’s filtering function; that’s why it’s a natural to help relieve colds and flu (some people even drink it to help relieve symptoms of asthma).

Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is made from freshly gathered, sun-ripened organic elderberries.  Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is available in an 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottle.

More About Celery Juice

Thursday, October 15, 2009 by Sara Cox
Celery juice—its benefits are almost limitless.  According to http://www.naturalnews.com/024596_celery_blood_salt.html, celery juice is highly nutritious and one of the most hydrating foods we can put in our bodies. Because it is incredibly alkalizing, it equalizes the body's PH, which is vital for peak health. In ancient times, it was considered a medicinal herb used to treat a variety of health complaints. The minerals and vitamins and nutrients are in perfect harmony with each other.”* Celery is high in vitamin A, vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C, potassium, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, sodium and essential amino acids.

Goherbalremedies.com calls celery the “most efficient medicinal plants, loaded with medicinal properties.”** Last week, we talked about its potential benefits for kidney stones and gall bladder problems, nerves, heart and muscle function, appetite suppression, migraines, rheumatism and dry skin.  Here are some additional benefits of drinking celery juice regularly:.

Fights Cancer
Celery juice may help the body fight cancer, as it is known to contain at least eight families of anti-cancer compounds.*  Rutgers University in New Jersey conducted a study that found that celery contains compounds—called acetylenics—that help prevent cancer cells from spreading.  The study also found that celery contains phonolic acids; these compounds block the action of prostaglandins, which encourage tumors to grow.*

Lowers Cholesterol
Celery juice may help lower cholesterol in two ways.  Laboratory studies have shown that a chemical contained in celery—butyl phthalide—may reduce levels of LDL cholesterol.  In addition, celery aids in increasing bile acid secretion, and that helps to remove cholesterol from the body.*
Digestion
Celery contains special nutrients in the fiber that are released during the juicing process.  These nutrients aid bowel movements, making celery juice a natural laxative to help relieve constipation.*

Anti-inflammation
According to a study published in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Science U.S.A., celery contains a phytonutrient called luteolin, which “prevents activation of a pathway that allows inflammation in the brain to get switched on.  Luteolin also inhibits the excess production of TNF-alpha, a direct cause of inflammation.  Juice is the most efficient and nutritious way to eat celery, and people who have these conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, asthma and bronchitis) can drink as much juice as desired without overdosing.”* (Italics mine)

Lowers Blood Pressure
Even though I mentioned this last week, I am bringing it up again because studies have shown that drinking celery juice daily for one week can significantly help lower blood pressure.*  It’s because of a compound called phtalides, which relaxes the muscles around the arteries, allowing blood to flow smoothly.

Urinary Tract and Gall Bladder Stones
Because celery juice is such a great eliminator of toxins from the body, it is believed to help break and eliminate urinary and gall bladder stones.  It also helps people who drink celery juice regularly avoid recurring stones.

Increased Sexuality
Got your attention with this one, did I?  Celery juice balances the system and is beneficial for weak sexuality.*  Yet, it doesn’t cause uncontrollable urges, as some pharmaceutical drugs can.

Drink Biotta Celery Root Juice
Make Biotta Celery Root Juice a part of your daily nutritional regimen.  Biotta’s Celery Root Juice is made from freshly harvested celeriac and is available in 16.9 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

More About Celery Juice

Monday, October 12, 2009 by Sara Cox

I’ve written before about the wonders of celery juice, but there are just so many benefits, it seemed like a good topic to revisit.

According to www.goherbalremedies.com, celery is one of the “most efficient medicinal plants, loaded with medicinal properties.  It has many incredible powers to cure health problems.  Almost all parts of celery are used as medicinal herbal remedy; stems, leaves and bulbous roots.”*
Kidney Stones and Gall Bladder
Celery juice can help rid the body of toxins and stimulate kidney function.  Since the recommended amount of celery juice helps remove accumulated fluids, it aids with kidney and gall bladder function.*

Nerves
Celery is believed to have a soothing effect on nerves because of its high calcium content.*

Heart, Kidney and Muscle Function
Celery is an excellent source of potassium, which helps kidneys function normally.  It’s also important for proper heart function and “plays a key role in skeletal and muscle contraction, making it important for normal digestion and muscular function, too.  A heart-healthy diet includes potassium from fruits, vegetables, and legumes.”**  Most Americans get less than 50 percent of the suggested 4,700 milligrams of potassium per day.

Appetite Neutralizer
Trying to lose weight?  Try celery juice treated with a hint of honey.  GoHerbalRemedies.com suggests it not only tastes good, but is effective in weight reducing.*

Lower Your Blood Pressure with Celery Juice
Celery juice is getting more and more attention these days, as it is loaded with potassium and magnesium.  It also contains 3-n-butyl-phthalide, a compound that relaxes muscle cells in the artery walls and effectively lowers blood pressure.***

Celery Juice and Migraines
Celery juice is recommended both as a preventive treatment and as a treatment during the acute migraine episode.  altMD, a website for alternative medicine techniques, states that one of the preventive actions people can take to prevent migraines is to consume celery juice twice daily.**** Celery juice should be considered by anyone who suffers from migraine headaches, both as a preventive measure and a cure during acute attacks.

Rheumatism
Celery juice is believed to help alleviate the symptoms of rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica and gout pain.*

Dry Skin
Because of celery juice’s high potassium content, it is a good herbal cure for dry and dehydrated skin.*

Other Wonders of Celery Juice
The benefits of celery root juice are almost hard to overstate.  Celery is high in magnesium, potassium, iron and chlorophyll, and is one of the richest sources of organic sodium.  Its potential benefits extend to a variety of ailments, including asthma, constipation, fever, fluid retention, inflammation and insomnia.  In fact, many people have found honey-treated celery juice to help induce a sound night’s sleep.*

The Food Pyramid - One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 by Sara Cox
We’ve all seen the food pyramid, detailing how many servings of each food group a person needs to consume in one day.  Now, even the food pyramid is changing!  In April 2005, the USDA released the MyPyramid food guidance system. Along with the new MyPyramid symbol, the system provides many options to help Americans make healthy food choices and to be active every day.

The Dietary Guidelines give science-based advice on food and physical activity choices for health. The guidelines define a healthy diet as one that:
  • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products;
  • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts; and
  • Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.*

You can use these guidelines to make smart food choices, find a good balance between food and physical activity, get the most nutrition out of the calories you consume, and stay within your daily calorie needs.

MyPyramid Plan
The site will help you customize your eating plan, taking into account such things as age, sex, height, weight and amount of physical activity.  Once your plan is customized, you can read further to find out more information regarding each of the food groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, meat and beans, and oils.*

Fruits and Vegetables
http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/vegetables.html and http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/fruits.html are sub-tier pages of the site that spell out what is included in the fruit and vegetable groups, the average recommended daily amount for each group, and what constitutes a healthy serving.  The site is easy to navigate and chockfull of worthwhile information.

Top 10 Ways to Avoid the Flu

Thursday, September 24, 2009 by Sara Cox
I wrote the other day about beating the flu by boosting your immune system.  Flu can be serious.  In the US, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year with the flu and 36,000 die!* With flu season fast approaching, it’s a great idea to follow these preventive measures to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy.

Our Top 10 List to Avoid the Flu:

10.   Get a flu shot.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly flu shot as an important step in protecting against seasonal influenza.

9.   Avoid close contact.  Keep your distance from people who are sick.  And, when you are not feeling well, stay away from others to protect them as well.

8.   Wash your hands often with soap and water.  If you can’t wash with soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

7.   Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs are spread this way, as a person touches something that is contaminated with bacteria and then touches his/her eyes, nose or mouth.

6.   Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

5.   Stay home when you are sick.  Stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.  If you are coming down with the flu, you can infect others one day before symptoms begin and 5-7 days after becoming sick.

4.   Get plenty of sleep.

3.   Be physically active.

2.   Drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious foods.*

And our number one way to avoid the flu:

1.   Drink Biotta All-Natural Fruit and Vegetable Juices!  One of the easiest and most effective ways to boost your immune system is with a healthy, balanced diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables.  Biotta juices are an all-natural way to get the recommended number of fruit and vegetable servings.

These juices are especially effective in boosting the immune system and helping you avoid illness (http://blog.biottajuices.com/blog/biotta):
