Why Did We Choose To Go Organic?

Sunday, March 14, 2010 by Mitch B
Many people may be asking why the popularity of organic foods has risen so much recently.  Also, you may wonder why Biotta made the decision to produce only organic vegetable juice and fruit juices.  To put it simply, organic foods and drinks are 100%... organic.  In the growth, harvesting, and processing phase, things like pesticides, artificial flavors and preservatives are never used.

What does this mean for the body?  According to Weightlossandtraining.com, "So is organic food better for you? Well if you consider that decreasing your toxin burden and increasing your intake of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can have a significant impact on health, then it certainly is."

Going organic was never a "joining the fad" decision for Biotta.  We've been doing it since the beginning - we're a pioneer in organic farming and production.  Our  mission is to promote good health and vitality.  Being organic supports that mission.  If you are looking for more information on our products, check out our organic carrot juice, beet juice, elderberry juice, or any of our other juices today!

Bugs Bunny had it all figured out...

Thursday, March 11, 2010 by Mitch B
I have a feeling that Bugs Bunny would have been the perfect spokesperson for Biotta Juice's Carrot Juice.  I can picture the commercial now...

First, he would pop out of the hole and tell us about the important connection between beta carotene and vision.  Biotta's carrot juice is packed full of Vitamin A and Beta Carotene which is essential to improve and maintain healthy vision.

Second, he would remind us that it is a completely organic juice with no added sugars, coloring or flavors.  In fact, the juice is 100% vegetable juice and free of preservatives and caffeine.

Finally, he would trick Elmer Fudd into falling for his own trap... What a Silly Wabbit...

Since that commercial hasn't been created yet, I suppose you'll have to settle for our website, which has more information on our carrot juice, as well as all of our other juices available!

Note:  Biotta juices are not intended to diagnose, cure, or prevent any disease.  We are not medical professionals and are not in a position to provide any medical advice.  We recommend that you contact your physician for a dietary regimen specific to your needs.

Too many options? BLEND them all together!

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 by Mitch B
The only problem you could face going through our product list is trying to decide just which one of our heart healthy juice you would like to incorporate into your diet... For those of you who might struggle with this, why not start off with a delicious vegetable juice cocktail from Biotta?

What's in our vegetable juice cocktail?
  • Tomatoes- Tomatoes include lycopene and according to Livestrong.com, "Lycopene gives the tomato its red color and has been found to have antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties."
  • Carrots- "The high traces of beta carotene boost the anti-oxidant properties of carrot juice. It is the beta carotene that converts into vitamin A inside the body. The vitamin A fights to eliminate the free radicals in the body and hence fights cancer." (Home Remedies for You)

  • Beets- Just check out this previous Biotta blog post on the benefits of drinking beet juice, including its heart healthy and cancer fighting qualities.

Are you Drinking Empty Calories?

Friday, February 19, 2010 by Sara Cox
When we think of calories, we think of them coming from the foods we eat.  When you have a medium cafe latte with whole milk with breakfast, then a 20 oz. regular soda ad lunch, and a 16 oz. sweetened iced tea with lemon mid-day, and glass of wine at dinner, that doesn't sound unreasonable, does it?  After all, they are liquid!

Those 4 beverages amont to 800 calories - or 40% of an average 2,000 calorie daily diet.  And although they keep you hydrated throughout the day, these 800 calories are EMPTY calories.

Sodas, coffee, tea...there is no nutritional benefit to any of these beverages, yet they seem to pack on the calories.  Drinking a 100% organic pure juice, like Biotta Juice, however, will provide you with the same calories, but with the added benefit of vitamins, minerals and other health benefits, like blood pressure lowering properties of our Beet Juice, and soothing an upset stomach like our Potato Juice.

Juice drinks and waters are often enhanced with vitamins and herbs.  Although at first glance they seem like a healthy alternative to soda, but how much sugar and artificial flavoring doe they contain?

Biotta Juices are 100% pure - not from concentrate and never diluted.  They are packed full of all natural nutrients, and come in 2 sizes of convenient, recyclable glass bottles.

Does Sauerkraut help Canker Sores?

Thursday, February 18, 2010 by Sara Cox
An excerpt from 'The People's Pharmacy' by Joe and Teresa Graedon

Q:
My favorite home remedy is sauerkraut for canker sores.  If I feel one coming on, I put a wad of chopped sauerkraut on the area, hold it there for a minute, then chew it and swallow.  I do this three or four times a day for 2-3 days.  At least 95% of the time, the sore disappears.  For me, that is a miracle, since I have been plagued for many years.

A:  Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are mysterious.  Trauma to the mouth from sharp food can trigger a sore.  So can immune suppression (chemotherapy) or a deficiency of folic acid, vitamin B-12 and iron.

Long ago, we heard about a 1930's canker-sore remedy.  A dentist recommended swishing sauerkraut juice serveral times a day, swallowing about a tablespoon.  Perhaps the bacteria that ferment cabbage into sauerkraut provide helpful nutrients.

As a sufferer of canker sores, myself, I can relate to this as a miracle!  Many things seem to cause mine - improper eating, lack of sleep and exercise, and of course, those times when the toothbrush slips right into your cheek.  And I thought Sauerkraut Juice was just good for digestion -- watch out canker sores!

Get Healthy as a Family

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 by Sara Cox

Have fruits and vegetables become a thing of the past?

One of today’s fastest growing problems is childhood obesity.  Why are so many kids packing on pounds? For the same reasons adults are: too many calories and too little exercise. "Adults are passing on their unhealthy habits to the next generation," says Colleen Thompson, a dietitian and coauthor of Overcoming Childhood Obesity (Bull, 2003). "Childhood obesity is really a family issue. To fix things, the whole family has to change."  A recent study of 3,000 kids ages 4 to 24 months found that many of the negative eating patterns plaguing adults are affecting children as early as infancy. Not only was fruit and vegetable consumption low, but french fries were the most popular choice of toddlers. Moreover, 40 percent of 7-month-olds and 60 percent of 1-year-olds had candy or dessert at least once a day.

Adopt a Healthier Lifestyle

Some basic things you can do to adopt a healthy lifestyle - for both you and your kids:
1.  Exercise.  Let your kids see you exercise.  Exercise with your kids.
2.  Eat dinner as a family.  Not only can you enjoy some quality time, but eating together helps you know what your kids are actually eating.
3.  Control portions - both for you and your kids.  Just becuase you are the parent, doesn't mean you need to eat 2-3 times as much as the kids.  Don't go back for seconds.  Kids see that and think that is what they are supposed to do.
4.  Model healthy behaviors.  You can't expect your kids to do things that you wouldn't do yourself.  Turn off the tv - eat your fruits and vegetables!
5.  Include healthy snacks and drinks - like Biotta 100% pure organic fruit and vegetable juices.  This is a great way to increase energy, enjoy a wholesome snack, and get your daily requirements of fruits and vegetables!

The first time I tried the beet juice, something incredible happended.  I was very tired, but after about 20-30 minutes, i felt revived . I have had beet juice before, but there must be something special in this brand of beet root. I gave some to my husband without telling him how it made me feel.  He also commented after by asking, "what kind of juice was that ??"  I purchase it for my friends for gifts, and have also tried the celery and carrot juice as well. I am hooked and want to be a distributor .

Drinking Beet Juice? Good For You!

Thursday, January 14, 2010 by George Pappas

Beets are amazing—the list of heart-healthy benefits keeps growing.  I read an article—actually  more like a Question and Answer column*—where someone had written in and asked if there were any natural ways to lower blood pressure.  This person was taking three drugs for hypertension and high cholesterol, and wanted to know if there were any healthy, organic products that could help lower her blood pressure and cholesterol.

The answer?  Beets.

Beets are Heart-Healthy …
We’ve talked about the benefits of beets and beet juice many times because research and studies have proven them to be true.  According to this article, beets contain powerful compounds that “reduce blood pressure, promote bile flow, ease digestive disorders, improve heart disease, lower cholesterol and prevent cancer.*”

Another benefit of beets and beet juice is that it reduces the risk for blood clots.  According to the same article*, the anti-platelet action of beets reduces the risk for blood clots by dissolving inorganic calcium that can clog up the blood vessels.  In fact, “beets can lower total cholesterol and triglycerides by 30 percent and 40 percent.*”  And a 2008 study in Hypertension found that drinking two cups of beetroot juice reduced blood pressure by up to 10 points, with no major side effects.*

… and Cancer-Fighting!
And then there’s potential cancer-fighting benefits.  Beets contain a compound called betacyanin, which is a powerful cancer fighter, especially when it comes to colon cancer.  Beets may also “negate the effects of eating processed meats laden with dangerous nitrosamines, which may help reduce the potential for stomach cancer.*”

And, if you think we are gangbusters over beets and beet juice, check out http://www.lovebeetroot.co.uk.  It’s a whole website devoted exclusively to the wonders of beets.  You can find information, recipes, the history of beetroot, and fast facts.**

Biotta Beet Juice
Biotta Beet Juice tastes terrific—so why not make it part of your regular daily nutrition?  Beet juice is Biotta’s most popular juice, rich with natural minerals and vitamins.  It’s a refreshing, crisp, cool and healthy addition to your diet.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

A Great New Year’s Resolution – Drink Biotta Juices!

Monday, January 11, 2010 by George Pappas

I recently read an interesting and informative article on making New Year’s resolutions.  Entitled “Make realistic resolutions for 2010,” the article, written by Jessica Smith, presents a doable approach to New Year’s resolutions.*

Since fitness is often in the top five resolutions people make, it’s important to be realistic in your goals.  The article talks about exercise—types, locations and duration.  The rest of the article deals with weight management, weight loss and proper nutrition.  It presents a sensible approach to this subject, and includes these tips for developing realistic nutritional goals:

  1. Eat more fruits and vegetables.  Interesting that this should be number one on her list.  What better way to get your fruits and vegetables than with Biotta’s 100% all-natural juices?
  2. Eat more whole grains and high-fiber foods.
  3. Eat balanced meals that contain a healthy carbohydrate, lean protein, healthy fat, and a fruit or veggie.  (Fruits and veggies again?  Think Biotta!)
  4. Eat breakfast (Biotta Breakfast Drink?)
  5. Don’t skip meals.
  6. Drink more water.
  7. Limit high-fat foods and fried or greasy foods.
  8. Limit fast food.
  9. Plan your meals before you go grocery shopping.
  10. Pack quick, healthy lunches and snacks to bring to work (Biotta’s single serving bottles are perfect on-the-go).
  11. Try eating 4-6 small meals or snacks per day.
  12. Practice eating slowly.  Stop when you are comfortably satisfied.*
Biotta’s organic juices fit perfectly in a healthy diet regimen.  If eating and feeling healthier is on your New Year’s resolution list, make sure Biotta juices are a part of your plan.

Taster’s Choice – As Seen in the San Francisco Chronicle

Friday, January 8, 2010 by George Pappas

Sunday, December 27, the San Francisco Chronicle ran a story entitled “Grocery store brands come out on top.”  Written by Amanda Gold, the article detailed research she had done in preparation for a local TV news segment where the subject was advertised brands of food versus grocery store brands, and how they stacked up. *

Local chefs, cookbook authors and food professionals tested products blind, and rated them based on texture, appearance and taste.  The panel of judges considered foods in many categories: snacks, beverages, dairy, fruits and vegetables, breakfast, baked goods, lunch and dinner, sweet and treats, and condiments. Of the vegetable juices they rated, Biotta’s Organic Vegetable Juice Cocktail was the winner.

A well-balanced blend, our Vegetable Juice Cocktail contains several vital nutrients from freshly gathered organic vegetables: tomatoes, carrots, celeriac and beetroots.  It has a rich tomato base.  Tomatoes contain natural lycopene (a phyto-nutrient) for improved cell function and cell metabolism compromised by environmental influences.  Biotta Vegetable Juice Cocktail is low in calories and contains large amounts of natural vitamin C.

This broad exposure for Biotta juices is the latest in a line of impressive media attention.  Biotta’s first national exposure came last April, when Whoopi Goldberg mentioned Biotta’s all-natural juices on The View.  Recently, our products have also been featured in Shape, OK! and Life & Style magazines, among others.  Be on the lookout in your favorite publications for more information on Biotta natural organic juices.

More than ever before, people want all-natural, organic juices that are as delicious as they are good for them.  Biotta juices fit into today’s active lifestyle perfectly.  Biotta organic juices provide a unique taste experience through all-natural whole fruits and vegetables, grown and harvested for optimum quality, then minimally processed to ensure great taste and high nutritional value.

The Juice – Your Questions Answered

Friday, January 1, 2010 by Sara Cox

Every day, we field questions about our Biotta juices—ingredients, potential health benefits, our proprietary manufacturing process, distribution, etc.  We thought that, if a few people are asking these questions, then perhaps many of you would be interested in the answers as well.  When you see our blog featuring The Juice – Your Questions Answered, you’ll know we are answering consumer questions about our 100% organic juices that may be relevant to you.

QUESTION:
I see sugar as one of the ingredients of your Elderberry Juice and Breakfast Juice.  Do your juices include added sugar?

ANSWER:
Elderberry juice is the only juice where we add sugar—organic cane sugar.  We add it because the elderberry has a very strong, bitter taste without the added sugar.  Elderberry Juice has 34 g of sugar in total; 10.5 g are naturally occurring, and 23.5g are added.

Our Breakfast Juice also lists 22.5g sugar, but all of the sugar content is naturally occurring from the ingredients of the product; there is no sugar added.  Our vegetable juices also contain sugar, but they are all naturally occurring.

The Benefits of 100% Organic Juices

Wednesday, December 30, 2009 by Sara Cox

Studies continue to show the benefits of organic products.  In the Fall issue of The Organic Report, the News & Trends section features an article on this subject.  It examines recent findings of a study conducted by the University of Aix-Marseille in France, commissioned by the French agency for Food Safety.

The study confirmed “…the high nutritional quality and safety of food produced using organic practices.”*  The benefits include more dry matter, minerals and antioxidant micronutrients than non-organic counterparts.  In addition, the study showed that 100% organic foods have “…significantly lower amounts of nitrates and residues of toxic chemical pesticides, fungicides and herbicide.”*

Biotta Juices – All-Natural. 100% Organic
What do we mean when we say our juices are 100% organic?  Biotta uses only organic farming for all our fruits and vegetables.  For more than 50 years, we’ve been dedicated to producing top-quality organic juices from fruits and vegetables that are fresh from the field to the bottle.  Over the years, Biotta has farmed more than 1,700 acres of chemical-free, fertilizer-free, and toxic-free land.

But, production processes also have a direct influence on the quality of a juice.  The basic rule is: the fewer steps in the production and the lower the processing temperature, the higher the nutritional value of the juice.  Biotta extracts juice from healthy, field/vine-ripened fruits and vegetables.  Competitors often store vegetable juices in tanks to be bottled as needed.  The result is that these juices are repeatedly heated and the quality is diminished.  Biotta bottles our juices immediately after extracting the juice.

And Biotta juices are never reconstituted from concentrates, and no artificial additives (preservatives, vitamins) are used.  Biotta juices are 100% organic, fresh from the field to the bottle.  Great care is taken throughout the growing and production processes to ensure our customers receive the freshest juices available on the market.

In the News – More on the Elderberry

Monday, December 28, 2009 by Sara Cox

I keep reading more and more about the benefits of elderberries.  In the Thursday, December 10 edition of the Indianapolis Star, two articles mention elderberry as an effective weapon to keep you healthy and to help you regain your health when you are ill.

In “Feeling Lousy?  These ideas may get you back in the pink,” author Shari Rudavsky talks about the research that backs up claims for therapies to try when you are ill.  One of the things she mentions is taking elderberry at the first sign of cold or flu.*

In the same issue, another article entitled “Alternatives: Experts Wary” talks about alternative therapies, what the Center for Disease Control and Prevention does and does not endorse, and what you can do to prevent and treat the flu.  The Star asked a number of local experts for their opinions.  Products with elderberry in them ranked high on the list.  That’s because, “…unlike other alternative products, elderberry has performed well in double-blind placebo-controlled studies that have shown that it can shorten the duration of the flu.  These studies, many done on a liquid extract of elderberry called Sambucol, found that elderberry worked best when taken with the onset of symptoms.”**

An article entitled “Are these fruit products as super as they claim?” looks skeptically on some of the newer, more “exotic” fruits, such as acai, goji, mangosteen, and maqui.  But, even this article admits that “…it’s a good idea to try to get more antioxidants into your diet.”***  That’s where the elderberry comes in.  “In general,” explains the article, “darker fruits and vegetables … have higher contents of …naturally occurring chemicals, called phytochemicals, that give them color.  More phytochemicals usually means a higher antioxidant content.”***

In previous posts (About the Elderberry-12/1/09 and The Benefits of Elderberry Juice-12/4/09), we’ve examined the ways elderberry juice can help boost your immune system, ease the strain on the respiratory system, and even help lower cholesterol.  Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is made from freshly gathered, sun-ripened organic elderberries and is available in an 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottle.

I heard on the news this morning that, although the cases of reported H1N1 flu are down right now, experts are bracing for another wave yet to come in January.  A recent article in Taste for Life magazine reviewed the common symptoms of the flu—fever, chills, cough, dry throat, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.  Flu lasts longer than the common cold—sometimes up to 12 days or longer.*  With an increasing number of deaths being linked to this highly contagious virus, it’s a great idea to boost your immune system to help fight off this and other viruses.

Boost Your Immune System
One of the easiest and most effective ways to boost your immune system is with a healthful, balanced diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables.  Biotta juices are an all-natural way to get the recommended number of fruit and vegetable servings.  In addition, certain juices are specifically believed to boost the immune system—especially elderberry, beet, and carrot juice.

Biotta Elderberry Juice
The Taste for Life article specifically mentioned the immune-building properties of the elderberry.  “While no medicine (herbal or conventional) has yet been definitively proven to kill the H1N1 virus, a recent cell study shows that the flavonoids in elderberry bind to this virus.  Investigators add that these substances ‘compare favorably to the known anti-influenza activities of Oseltamivir (Tamiflu).’”*

Another recent study, cited in a PRWeb® press release** also cited the benefits of elderberries in boosting immunity.  Elderberries have twice the amount of antioxidants as blueberries and cranberries.  Elderberry juice also supplies vitamin C to assist in the prevention and treatment of colds; it’s been medically proven as a strong anti-viral and immune system enhancer.  Biotta’s Elderberry Juice is made from freshly gathered, sun-ripened organic elderberries and is available in an 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottle.

Kids, Drink Your Vegetables!

Monday, December 21, 2009 by George Pappas

We all know children don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables.  An article in the November 2009 edition of Taste for Life magazine, entitled “eat your veggies,” reported that, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “only 33 percent of all adults in this country eat two or more daily servings of fruit, and just 27 percent consume the recommended three or more daily servings of vegetables.”*

But the news regarding children is even more dismal.  The article goes on to report that “under 10 percent of American high school students are eating sufficient amounts of fruits and veggies.”*

William H. Dietz, MD, who directs the CDC’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity states, “A diet high in fruits and vegetables is important for optimal child growth, maintaining a healthy weight, and prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and some cancer, all of which currently contribute to healthcare costs in the United States.”*

Drink Biotta 100% Organic Juices
Overall, people who consume sufficient amounts of fruits and vegetables are less likely to have chronic diseases, including stroke, type 2 diabetes, some forms of cancer, and perhaps heart disease.  So, how to get you children to consume the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables?  Give them Biotta all-natural juices.
