Nitrate Rich Veggies Lower Blood Pressure

Wednesday, August 4, 2010 by Mitch B
A few years ago, scientists in Sweden conducted a number of experiments and found that nitrate rich vegetables help lead to lower blood pressure!  Below is an except from the study:

Each participant rotated between taking a daily dose of nitrate supplement equivalent to the amount normally found in 150 to 250 gm of a nitrate-rich vegetable including spinach, lettuce, or beetroot for three days, and taking a placebo for a different three days.

The results showed that average diastolic blood pressure was lower after three days of nitrate supplementation than it was after taking the placebo for three days.

Many of the vegetables in Biotta's Juices are packed full of nitrates that will help your body see these same effects!  Biotta has always been dedicated to providing the best quality juice possible that will benefit your body the most, including our beet juice, carrot juice and many others!

Beet Juice and Heart Health

Friday, July 30, 2010 by Mitch B
Today, I stumbled upon a very interesting study explaining another one of the ways that beet juice benefits the body.  Doctors have even more evidence in the powerful connection between beet juice and blood pressure.  I have included excerpts from the article below:

"[The scientists] found that drinking 500 millilitres of the juice led to significant reductions in blood pressure within hours.

The effect was traced to nitrate in the vegetable which reacted with bacteria in the mouth. This led to chemical changes which resulted in blood vessels dilating to increase blood flow.

Fourteen healthy volunteers were recruited for the study and asked to drink either 500 millilitres of beetroot juice or the same quantity of water within 30 minutes.   Volunteers who drank the juice started to show reductions in blood pressure after just one hour.

After two and a half hours, their systolic rate - the pressure with each heartbeat - was around 10 millimeters of mercury (mm of Hg) lower than that of participants who had drunk water.

For the diastolic reading - the "resting" pressure between heartbeats - a reduction of 8 mm Hg was seen in the juice drinkers after three hours.
"

Understanding Nitrates...

Sunday, July 18, 2010 by Mitch B
We've always put an emphasis on promoting the fact that our juices contain so many nitrate rich vegetables!  But I wanted to make sure that before we continue discussing nitrates and the effect they have on the body, you had an idea of exactly what nitrates are and what they do!

According to health expert Paul Johnson, "Nitrate is a salt of nitric acid, and is an essential plant nutrient found in soil that is taken in by plants and used as their primary nitrogen source. Thus, nitrate is a natural part of all vegetables, fruits and cereals."

He also goes on to discuss the effect of nitrates on hypertension: "How can nitrates help with hypertension? New studies have found that nitrates, nutrients found in leafy green vegetables such as lettuce and spinach, may actually help control blood pressure by maintaining the health of blood vessels."

Conveniently enough, he finishes his article by promoting a few vegetables that are very high in nitrates, including:
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Cabbage
  • Beets
  • Radishes
  • Carrots
Now you know why all of us here at Biotta take time to promote a nitrate-rich diet!  Nearly all of our organic vegetable juice is packed full of nitrates!  For a complete list of Biotta's vegetable juices, click here!

Breuss Vegetable Juice- The Cancer Fighting Juice.

Saturday, July 10, 2010 by Mitch B
In the early 1900s, naturopath Rudolph Breuss developed a recipe for Breuss Juice as anbruess alternative method of treating disease, including cancer. Juice is particularly suited for juice-fasting regimens because it is composed of a balanced blend of vegetables to provide the nutrients the body needs during a purification regimen.

Breuss went on to write a book entitled The Breuss Cancer Cure.  In his book, that you can still buy today, he claims that cancer feed and grows on protein.  He deduces that fasting could detoxify and cleanse the body, while starving the cancer.  Many people still use this advice today!

Today, the juice is developed according to the original recipe used many years ago. In fact, Biotta holds the exclusive license for the worldwide production and distribution of the juice!  Biotta’s Breuss juice is made from a large selection of nutrient-rich vegetables, including freshly gathered organic vegetable such as beetroots, carrots, celeriac, potatoes and radishes.

Beet Juice Helps to Lower Blood Pressure!

Monday, June 21, 2010 by Mitch B
The following is an excerpt of a Q & A from The People's Pharmacy regarding the health benefits connecting blood pressure and  beet juice:

Q. Is there anything in the way of vitamins or herbs that a person can take instead of a prescription drug for high blood pressure?

A. The newest candidate for natural blood pressure control is beet juice. A study in the journal Hypertension (online Feb. 4, 2008) showed that two cups (500 ml) of beet juice lowered blood pressure by approximately 10 points. That is better than many prescription drugs. The effect lasts up to 24 hours.

Beets are high in dietary nitrate and increase the amount of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide (NO) helps blood vessels relax, lowering blood pressure. NO has anti-inflammatory activity and discourages blood clot formation.

Every bottle of is packed full of essential vitamins and minerals that promote good health!  Check out the full selection on our Products Page!

High Cholesterol? Turn to a Heart Healthy Diet

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 by Mitch B
According to the American Heart Association, over 100 million Americans are at high risk or borderline-risk of high blood pressure.  It is a problem that causes suffering in people of all ages across the country and is only getting worse.

WebMD has many resources for those suffering and those who are at risk.  In one article they discuss diet, which is one of the leading factors in developing high cholesterol and heart disease.

They say, "While most dietary plans just tell you what you CAN'T eat (usually your favorite foods!), the most powerful nutrition strategy helps you focus on what you CAN eat. In fact, heart disease research has shown that adding heart-saving foods is just as important as cutting back on others."

The first recommendation they make on their website is very straight forward:

Eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes. These wonders of nature may be one of the most powerful strategies in fighting heart disease. The increase in dietary fiber helps lower bad LDL cholesterol.

This is an important piece of advice to EVERYONE, no matter what gender, age, race... By adding vegetables, fruits, etc. into your diet, you can drastically cut back your risk for high cholesterol and heart disease.

There are simple steps to make this change.  Instead of sodas, why not have a glass of organic vegetable juice from Biotta?  Put down bowls of sugary cereal for breakfast and instead have a glass of Biotta's Breakfast Blend!

All of our juices are packed full of nitrate rich vegetables and fruits and they can easily be the first step toward a healthy lifestyle!

Beet Juice Makes Workouts Easier...

Wednesday, May 19, 2010 by Mitch B
I have struggled for a long time trying to gain the motivation and the energy to go work out.  I always make the promise to myself, but just get too tired! I've tried plenty of different things to break the cycle and I haven't been able to find anything that provides the energy I need.

What a convenient time to find this journal article published in The Journal of Applied Physiology that states that beet juice can boost your stamina and, in fact, "[The scientists] were amazed by the effects of beet juice on oxygen uptake because these effects cannot be achieved by any other known means, including training."

In other words, the nitrate in beet juice leads to a lowering in oxygen uptake, which in turn makes exercise less tiring!  The study also found that people who consumed the juice had a lower resting heart rate!

If you're looking for a swift kick to help your workout, why not look into a bottle of Biotta's organic beet juice!

High Blood Pressure? BEET IT!

Monday, May 3, 2010 by Mitch B
High blood pressure is a serious problem for thousands of Americans.  Many people, including sufferers, don't know the list of effects that high blood pressure can have on the body.  High blood pressure is the leading cause of strokes, it can cause blood vessels in the eye to rupture causing blindness, and it also can lead to kidney failure!

Luckily, scientists have found a simple solution to combating and preventing high blood pressure: Beet Juice

Scientists have performed numerous studies and found that many patients saw their blood pressure decrease after consuming beet juice.

Here is how it works, according to the article:
Nitrate in the beet juice is converted by bacteria living on the tongue into the chemical nitrite. Once it enters the stomach, it becomes nitric oxide or re-enters the blood stream as nitrite. The researchers found that blood pressure was at its lowest when the nitrite levels in the blood were at their highest.

The recommended use is two glasses of juice a day for the effects to take place.  If you want to learn about beet juice benefits, check out the Biotta website

Beet Juice is Perfect for Athletes

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 by Mitch B
Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld is a big fan of beets.  He has reported on Fox News about the long list of benefits of beet juice and during one clip he talks about the benefits athletes can find drinking beet juice.

"If you take two glasses of beet juice a day," says Rosenfeld, "and you're an athlete or a would be athlete, or if you're elderly and need more energy, two glasses of beet juice a day will increase your energy level significantly...  What it does is it increases the oxygen demand when you're exercising."

Beets are full of nitrates that cause this to happen.  By drinking a couple of glasses, you will be in a better position to work out than with simply hydrating (although you should never omit water from you diet).

If you're looking for more benefits, I recommend checking out some other blog posts we have about the amazing results from drinking Biotta's beet juice!

Replace Diet Soda with Beet Juice

Saturday, March 13, 2010 by Mitch B
So yesterday, I talked about putting down the empty calories/sugar-laden soda and replace it with Biotta's vitamin and mineral-rich vegetable juices.  Here is some more information in support of that - even if you are drinking DIET soda:

Registered dietitian Patti Milligan recently did an interview with an Alabama news station where she gave her expert opinion on drinking healthy beverages.

While most people think that switching to diet soda is the biggest step to losing weight, Patti disagrees.  "The amount of chemicals in diet soda really play havoc with the metabolic furnace - which is your liver. It does not crank up metabolism," Milligan explained.

The truth is, if you want to move toward a healthier diet, you're going to have to drink more nutritious beverages throughout the day.  She listed five drinks to consider switching to.  One of the juices she emphasized the most- Beet Juice!

"The compounds in [beet juice] are related to nitrates and they seem to help convert in the body a better utilization of our oxygen," Milligan said.

We are so excited to see beet juice getting the love it deserves!  We have known for years just how much beet juice benefits the body's immune system and circulatory system... When are you going to find out for yourself?

The Benefits of 100% Organic Juices

Wednesday, December 30, 2009 by Sara Cox

Studies continue to show the benefits of organic products.  In the Fall issue of The Organic Report, the News & Trends section features an article on this subject.  It examines recent findings of a study conducted by the University of Aix-Marseille in France, commissioned by the French agency for Food Safety.

The study confirmed “…the high nutritional quality and safety of food produced using organic practices.”*  The benefits include more dry matter, minerals and antioxidant micronutrients than non-organic counterparts.  In addition, the study showed that 100% organic foods have “…significantly lower amounts of nitrates and residues of toxic chemical pesticides, fungicides and herbicide.”*

Biotta Juices – All-Natural. 100% Organic
What do we mean when we say our juices are 100% organic?  Biotta uses only organic farming for all our fruits and vegetables.  For more than 50 years, we’ve been dedicated to producing top-quality organic juices from fruits and vegetables that are fresh from the field to the bottle.  Over the years, Biotta has farmed more than 1,700 acres of chemical-free, fertilizer-free, and toxic-free land.

But, production processes also have a direct influence on the quality of a juice.  The basic rule is: the fewer steps in the production and the lower the processing temperature, the higher the nutritional value of the juice.  Biotta extracts juice from healthy, field/vine-ripened fruits and vegetables.  Competitors often store vegetable juices in tanks to be bottled as needed.  The result is that these juices are repeatedly heated and the quality is diminished.  Biotta bottles our juices immediately after extracting the juice.

And Biotta juices are never reconstituted from concentrates, and no artificial additives (preservatives, vitamins) are used.  Biotta juices are 100% organic, fresh from the field to the bottle.  Great care is taken throughout the growing and production processes to ensure our customers receive the freshest juices available on the market.

Want more information about Biotta juices?  If you’re a consumer and want to know where to find our juices, click on the beet juice icon on the right.  If you’re a retailer that already carries our juices, click the carrot juice icon to be included in our retailer directory.  If you have any other questions, just email us.

More about Beet Juice

Thursday, December 10, 2009 by Sara Cox

We’ve written often about the wonders of beet juice.  Here are a few of the benefits highlighted in recent articles:

1.    Provides energy boost.  A recent study published by Exeter University concluded that drinking two glasses of beetroot juice per day can help people exercise for up to 16% longer.*

2.    Lowers blood pressure.  An online February 4th issue of Hypertension cited a study that showed a drop in blood pressure one hour after drinking beet juice.  The study concluded that two cups of beet juice can lower blood pressure by approximately 10 points.

3.    Increases dietary nitrates – Beet juice increases the amount of nitric oxide in the body.  That, in turn, helps blood vessels relax, lowers blood pressure and has anti-inflammatory benefits as well.**

4.    May assist in helping other illnesses and healthcare issues – Many other sources indicate that beet juice may be therapeutic for sexual weakness, kidney stones, gall bladder, kidney, liver and prostate troubles.***

5.    Aids in digestion problems – Beet juice contains chlorine, a mineral acts to regulate digestion by controlling the rhythmical contraction of the abdomen.***

6.    Builds immune system – Beet juice is also believed to help maintain cell function and strengthen your body’s own natural resistance to disease.

7.    Helps build strong bones – Beet juice contains calcium, important to maintaining bone health.****

8.    Helps fight cancer - Betacyanin is the ingredient that has been identified as the main tumor-fighting agent in beets.  Betacyanin gives beets its bright reddish purple color, and it also helps to detoxify the body, in general.*****

Beet Red
Beets can also be used as a natural food coloring.  In 1971, Red No. 2 dye was linked to cancer and, ever since then, health-conscious consumers have been looking for natural food dyes.  Beets have a distinct red color that can be used as a natural food dye or spray dried to make beet root powder.******

The Amazing Beet
In addition to these wonderful health benefits, did you know that beets can help defeat icy roads?  Seriously. In states like Maryland, beets are being used as a great eco de-icer!  “It is the sugar beet’s by-product—a de-sugared liquid typically fed to animals or flushed down the drain—that can withstand temperatures down to -30 degrees Fahrenheit.”  “…Combinations of beet juice and rock salt are being sprayed on streets and highways by the transportation departments in DC, Missouri and Ohio and in cities scattered throughout the Midwest and Northeast,”*******

Biotta Beet Juice
Uses for the astounding beet just keep multiplying!  At any rate, Biotta Beet Juice is our most popular selection, rich with natural minerals and vitamins.  It’s a refreshing, crisp, cool and healthy addition to your diet.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

The Other Side of Beet Juice

Friday, November 13, 2009 by George Pappas
We’ve talked many times about the amazing properties and health benefits of beet root juice.  Beet juice can help lower blood pressure, increase dietary nitrates and thereby increase stamina, aid in digestive problems, detoxify the body, build the immune system, strengthen bones, and help fight cancer by breaking up tumors.

Beet Juice Sensitivity
But, some articles have surfaced that warn about the dangers of drinking beet juice straight.  While most people do not have a problem drinking beet juice, in some people, drinking straight beet juice can cause giddiness, heartthrob, general weakness and vomiting.*

Drink Beet Juice in Combination
If you are sensitive to beet juice and can’t drink it without feeling dizzy or lightheaded, a simple solution is to try combining beet juice with other organic juices and vegetables.  In this way, your body can reap the benefits of beet juice’s healthy properties without experiencing unpleasant side effects.  Some wonderful carrot/beet combinations include:
•    Carrot, beet, ginger, garlic
•    Carrot, beet, cucumber
•    Carrot, beet, parsley, cucumber
•    Carrot, spinach, beet
•    Carrot, celery, parsley, beet
•    Carrot, beet, cucumber, parsley, garlic **
Try combining Biotta Beetroot Juice with our Carrot or Celery Root Juices for a wonderful, refreshing, healthy taste treat.

Beet Juice Can Increase Energy
Remember, for most people, drinking beet juice straight is not a problem.  In fact, recent research shows that drinking two glasses of beet juice daily gives you more energy.  The research showed how the nitrate contained in beetroot juice leads to a reduction in oxygen uptake, making exercise less tiring. The study revealed that drinking beet juice reduces oxygen uptake to an extent that cannot be achieved by any other known means, including training.***  The study, published Feb. 2008 in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, also showed that people who drank beet juice also had a lower resting blood pressure.

Beet juice is Biotta’s most favored juice by consumers, rich with natural minerals and vitamins.  In all likelihood, you won’t have any problem drinking Biotta Beet Juice straight.  If you do, try one of the juice combinations listed above.  Beet juice is refreshing, crisp, cool and a healthy addition to your diet.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

Beet Juice and Cancerous Tumors

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 by George Pappas
Forty percent of our population will likely have to deal with cancer at some point.  That’s a lot of people.  Since tumors often grow more than 20 years without detection before they are diagnosed, eating and drinking foods that protect against this serious problem is an excellent idea.

Enter the lowly beet.  Beets are one of nature’s astounding wonders.  Recent studies have shown that beets increase stamina during exercise by 16 percent.*  Add that to all the other known health benefits of beet juice—including lowering blood pressure, increasing dietary nitrates, aiding in digestive problems, building the immune system and strengthening bones—and you have one powerhouse food.
But did you know that beet juice has also been shown to break up cancers and tumors?  In the 1950s, Dr. Ferenczi of Hungary used beets exclusively to break up tumors in the body.**  Tumors were often eliminated, but he found that they returned if the patient stopped eating beets and drinking beet juice.  These findings confirmed that eating beets and drinking beet juice was not just a short-term fix, but rather a lifestyle solution.

Cancer-fighting Betacyanin
Betacyanin is the ingredient that has been identified as the main tumor-fighting agent in beets.  Betacyanin gives beets its bright reddish purple color, and it also helps to detoxify the body, in general.

Beets' potential effectiveness against colon cancer, in particular, has been demonstrated in several studies. In one study, animals with chemically induced colon cancer and high cholesterol were divided into two groups. “One group received a diet high in beet fiber while the other group served as a control. The beet fiber-fed animals rose to the challenge by increasing their activity of two antioxidant enzymes in the liver, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase. The liver is the body's primary detoxification organ where toxic substances are broken down and eliminated, a process that generates a lot of free radicals. Glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase are the bodyguards for liver cells, protecting them from free radical attack, so they can continue to protect us.”***
“In other animal studies, scientists have noted that animals fed beet fiber had an increase in their number of colonic CD8 cells, special immune cells responsible for detecting and eliminating abnormal cells. With the increased surveillance provided by these additional CD8 cells, the animals in one of the studies given beet fiber had fewer pre-cancerous changes.  In stomach cancer patients, when scientists compared the effects of fruit and vegetable juices on the formation of nitrosamines, ...beet juice was found to be a potent inhibitor of the cell mutations caused by these (cancer-causing) compounds.”***
Add beet juice to your diet and increase your body’s tumor-fighting capability.  Beet juice is Biotta’s most favored juice by consumers, rich with natural minerals and vitamins.  It’s a refreshing, crisp, cool and healthy addition to your diet.  Biotta’s Beet Juice is available in 16.9 and 8.4 fl. oz. recyclable glass bottles.

Nitric Oxide and Blood Pressure

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 by George Pappas

What is nitric oxide, and how can it help lower your blood pressure?  The juice of dark leafy vegetables and dark red vegetables (such as beets) all produce nitric oxide.  These vegetables are high in nitrates, and dietary nitrates help to increase the amount of nitric oxide in the body.  When you drink beet juice, the nitrates are turned into nitrites and, in your stomach, nitrites turn into nitric oxide.

Why is nitric oxide important?
Nitric oxide enters your bloodstream as nitrites and lowers blood pressure in as little as three hours by relaxing blood vessels.*  A scientific journal paper entitled “Acute blood pressure lowering, vasoprotective and anti-platelet properties of dietary nitrate via bioconversion to nitrite” was published in the February 2008 edition of Hypertension.*  It explained that, if your blood vessels cannot expand or contract to handle differences in blood flow, nitric oxide may be helpful.  And if you have thick blood that clots too easily, beet juice, in particular, may have anti-clotting properties.

Drink Beet Juice to Lower Blood Pressure
The article stated that drinking two cups of beet juice daily may protect against endothelial dysfunction—that’s when blood vessels cannot expand and contract normally.  A study in Hypertension (online February 4, 2008) explained that two cups of beet juice can lower blood pressure by 10 points and last up to 24 hours, which is more effective than many prescription drugs.*

Other Beet Juice Benefits

Be Kind to Your Heart – with Biotta Juices

Monday, October 5, 2009 by George Pappas
Heart disease is THE NUMBER ONE killer of people in the United States.  Estimates for the year 2006 reflected that 80,000,000 people in the United States had one or more forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including:

•    High blood pressure — 73,600,000
•    Coronary heart disease — 16,800,000
•    Myocardial infarction (acute heart attack) — 7,900,000
•    Angina pectoris (chest pain or discomfort caused by reduced blood supply to the heart muscle) — 9,800,000
•    Stroke — 6,500,000
•    Heart Failure — 5,700,000*

Heart disease is also linked to emotional well-being, so a strong heart can help alleviate depression and stress, as well.

Drink Biotta Juices for a Healthier Heart
Certain juices are believed to be extremely heart-healthy.  If you have heart disease or if you want to avoid getting heart disease, making these juices part of your healthy regimen is a great idea.
Beet Juice
In addition to beet juice’s many other benefits, it also lowers blood pressure.  An online February 4, 2009  issue of Hypertension cited a study that showed a drop in blood pressure one hour after drinking beet juice.  The study concluded that two cups of beet juice can lower blood pressure by approximately 10 points.  Beet juice also increases the amount of nitric oxide in the body.  That, in turn, helps blood vessels relax, lowers blood pressure and has anti-inflammatory benefits as well.**

An August 2009 published study by Exeter University concluded that drinking two glasses of beetroot juice per day can help people exercise for up to 16% longer.  The nitrates in beets reduce the oxygen demand when exercising.  The double-blind study focused on men ages 19-38.  They were given 500 ml of organic beetroot juice for six consecutive days before completing a series of exercise tests.  The men who drank the beetroot juice were able to cycle longer than the men given the placebo – blackcurrant cordial.  The group drinking the beetroot juice also had lower resting blood pressure rates.***

Celery Juice
Celery juice helps kidneys function better and is also recommended both as a preventive treatment and as a treatment during the acute migraine episode.  Celery juice is getting more and more attention these days, as it is loaded with potassium and magnesium.  It also contains 3-n-butyl-phthalide, a compound that relaxes muscle cells in the artery walls and effectively lowers blood pressure.**** Many people find the benefits of celery root juice extend to a variety of other illnesses, including asthma, constipation, fever, fluid retention, headache, inflammation, insomnia, nervous problems and weight loss.  Celery juice provides a significant source of potassium, which is great for a hydrated and healthy skin.

Carrot Juice
Carrot juice—it’s full of benefits for you.  High in vitamin and magnesium content, it can be used in all sorts of eye diseases and also as a stress reliever.*****  Carrot juice can lower blood sugar, reduce the risk of heart diseases and stroke, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation and enhance eyesight.

Vegetable Juice

Biotta’s Vegetable Juice Cocktail is a well-balanced blend of several vital nutrients.  It’s made from freshly gathered organic vegetables, including tomatoes, carrots, celeriac and beetroots, finished off with lemon juice, spices and a pinch of sea salt.  It’s delicious and good for you, too.
